KASAMMA-KO’s Statement on the Heroic Day of Jeon Tae-il – A Workers’ Rights Activist

KASAMMA-KO stands in solidarity with all those present in honoring the heroic day of Jeon Tae-il.  A worker who awakened and dedicated his life to change the economic and political system of Korea which was then under the fascist dictatorship of President Park Chung He.  From a simple demand for the implementation of labor laws because the workers were treated inhumanely, without proper sleeping accommodations and forced overtime without pay, he took the path of democracy, his sacrifice awaken the Korean people who were afraid of the fascist dictator and stood up and fought against fascism.

Fifty-five years have passed since he offered his own life, but the labor laws remain oppressive to workers, especially for migrant workers who work in the farms, construction, and in the small and medium industries, who face many restrictions on changing their workplaces. They suffer from unpaid, delayed salaries, industrial accidents, and death. Moreover, they experienced discrimination and inhumane housing, especially those who work on the farm.
