APMM’s Statement on International Migrants Day

Advancing our commitment to support the migrant movement for their rights, welfare, and dignity requires more than words – it demands accountability

The Tai Po fire in Hong Kong exposed the systemic neglect faced by migrant domestic workers. The massive fire killed 160 lives, including 10 migrant domestic workers who were trying to save themselves and their wards (children and the elderly). The Mission for Migrant Workers (MFMW) and Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge (BHMWR) reported that 232 migrant domestic workers were affected by the Tai Po fire, of whom 92 are Filipinos and 140 are Indonesians. Overall, nearly 2,000 households were affected, and 31 people are still missing.
