Statement on the trial of Duterte to be held on September 23, 2025

In recent days, Migrant South Korea was shocked by the news that the preliminary hearing in the case of FPRRD on September 23, 2025, would not proceed because Duterte was unable to attend. According to Kauffman, Duterte’s lawyer, he no longer remembers everything, including his family (cognitive deficiencies).

Even the victim’s lawyer, Atty. Kristina Conti, expressed disappointment at the ICC’s decision to postpone the hearing to September 23, as she said Duterte is really good at putting alibi in front of the public, and based on the statement of Duterte’s daughter, Kitty Duterte, her father was strong before the ICC announced the postponement, which was only due to a desperate move by Duterte’s camp.

Even the victims’ families expressed disappointment at the ICC’s decision to postpone, as they said their long wait for justice would be delayed simply because of a liar’s alibi.

We at Migrante Seoul are also deeply concerned about whether the camp of FPRRD’s desire to have the motion for indefinite suspension of the hearing happen just for the sake of drama will be followed, because we believe that while the ICC treats its defendants humanely, we also hope that their analysis will be scientific and that they will not agree to desperate measures. Instead, we hope that any medical examinations will be made public to reveal to the victims and the people who are hoping for justice thru holding FPRRD accountable for the crime against humanity he committed.

Duterte’s draconian policies have led to numerous human rights violations in the Philippines (War on Drugs, EO 70, EO 32), including the killing of over 30,000 people under the War on Drugs, including activists; the Tumandok Massacre in 2018; the killing of lawyers, journalists, doctors, and activists in Negros, like human rights activist Sara Alvarez; the massacre of ALKADEV teachers; and the launch of a war against the people, such as the Bloody Sunday Massacre and EO 32, or a state of lawlessness, where the regions affected by it have still not achieved justice, such as the Bicol-Samar Region, Negros Island, and the Moro-Moro war in Marawi. All of this falls under the case of violations of International Human Rights Law (IHL), which are still occurring to this day.

That’s why we, as representatives of migrant workers here in Korea, continue to unite in the call for Duterte’s imprisonment.

Duterte Imprison!

VP Sara put on Trials!

BBM hold Accountable!
